A week in the life of a self-employed multi-passionate

Writer: Jess AmburgeyJess Amburgey

Every week looks a little different when you're juggling multiple passions. Last week was the perfect example of how turning diverse skills into multiple streams of income can add up to a thriving, full-time self-employed career.

I start my mornings around 6AM, I've always naturally been a morning person. I make some coffee - coconut milk latte with caramel, cinnamon, and a hint of salt - I grab my juice shot that I usually make over the weekends - orange, ginger, and lemon - and a big ole water, then head to my office located directly beside the bedroom. 😝

The easiest way to recap my week is to break down the main things I do:

SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGEMENT

This work makes up the bulk of my time and is my largest income stream. Right now, I’m managing eight social media accounts for various clients, each getting about 3-4 posts per week. Last week alone, I created and scheduled about 27 client posts—plus handled stories, DMs, event pages, ad management, and more.

I also carved out time to post for myself—a recap of a speaking event from the week before and a fun reel. On my personal social media, I aim for a mix of content—helpful insights, service highlights (since I have a few 😝), relatable humor, and lighthearted posts that showcase my personality.

I had a discovery Zoom meeting scheduled to onboard a new client. These deep-dive calls help me understand the business, social media goals, target audience, and how they’re currently attracting clients. Afterward, I create weeks’ worth of content ideas for approval to make sure we’re aligned. Unfortunately, my client had to reschedule due to illness, so while I played around with some content ideas, the real work starts once that meeting happens—which is set for this week!

PHOTOGRAPHY

I typically schedule 1-3 shoots per week, intentionally building in breaks every few weeks to catch up—photography isn’t my main income stream, and I like to keep it that way.

Saturday’s first shoot was a special one—I photographed a family for the second time. The last time we met, their daughter was just a newborn. Now, she’s over a year old! Capturing growing families is one of my favorite parts of this work. It was cold, but we powered through!

My second shoot was supposed to be outdoor headshots, but thanks to Louisville’s unpredictable weather, we had to reschedule due to rain. Often, we don’t make the final call until the morning of the shoot.

Shoot number three was for my social media client, BoomBozz Pizza & Watch Bar. My social clients get professional content shoots as part of their packages, so every few months, we capture fresh photos, videos, and trending audio for reels. These sessions usually last a couple of hours—and as a bonus, I left with some delicious pizza. Perks of the job! 🍕

And in the background of all this, I’m deep in the editing trenches—over 2,000 photos from a school portrait session at St. Joseph Children’s Home, where I photographed more than 100 kids for their school pictures. Lots of work, but worth it!

COACHING

I Just wrapped up a 3-month coaching partnership with an incredible client from Texas—she found me by Googling "multi-passion coach" (how cool is that? yay SEO!). She’s a realtor, clothing brand owner, and aspiring nonprofit founder, and watching her gain clarity and momentum in all these areas has been amazing.

One of my favorite parts of coaching is revisiting the intake form from day one—it’s always such a powerful reminder of how far my clients have come. I also send a feedback form at the end of every cycle, and hearing about the breakthroughs and blocks they’ve overcome truly makes my heart full.

Check out her transformation below!

The same day I wrapped up this coaching partnership, I had a call with another incredible woman interested in coaching. Like many of my clients, she’s juggling multiple businesses and looking for ways to streamline them—exactly the kind of challenge I love helping with.

I always schedule an initial call with potential clients to give them the space to ask questions, explore their goals, and get a feel for my coaching style. From the start, our conversation flowed, and by the end of the call, she signed a three-month coaching contract. It’s important that they feel confident and supported before we dive in—and I’m pumped to start this journey with her!

PUBLIC SPEAKING

The Friday prior I had that speaking engagement for the Women's Business Center of Kentucky Expo. This was a spectacular event with some incredible women. All that was left to do last week was send my invoice, ask for a testimonial for my website, and download some of the event photos. Thanks for the snaps, Chanel!

TAXES

Taxes are easily one of the most dreaded parts of entrepreneurship—and for many, a major reason they hesitate to take the leap. I totally get it! Even though I’ve found a trusted CPA, there’s still plenty of prep work on my end—tracking miles, organizing write-offs, and making sure everything is accounted for. I use QuickBooks, which helps streamline the process, but let’s be honest... I still tend to put it off until the last minute. Maybe this will be the year I finally stay ahead of it—one can dream, right? 😅

On the bright side, pre-paying online throughout the year has been a game-changer. Since I usually owe around $20,000 (😳), spreading out payments makes it a little less painful. If you're navigating self-employment taxes too, just know you're not alone in the struggle!

IN CONCLUSION

Last week was a whirlwind—while I strive for balance, some weeks are just nonstop. The good news? Everything that kept me busy was meaningful (well… except for tax prep, ha!).

On a personal note, I wrapped up the week at an incredible fundraising event for the Americana Community Center. Hearing women speak on immigration and the vital role this center plays in so many lives was truly powerful. Unfortunately, they’re now facing closure, and their work is too important to lose. I highly recommend seeing how you can help!
